There is certainly a school of thought that horses going barefoot is the way forward. Now although to some, this is a little controversial, when you think about it horses were indeed born barefoot and it is we, “man”, who has made the decision to shoes them.

Of course, removing and stopping use of traditional metal horseshoes does require a shift in thinking, and it is a responsibility to be borne.

Some owners simply think that by removing the shoes, this gives them a barefoot horse and makes them the archetypal “barefoot owner”.

The strong movement of people who consider themselves to be true “barefooters” claim that the real idea is simply to put the needs of the horse first-as simple as that. This means that you need to open yourself up to the thinking that there is no single correct or, indeed, wrong answer and that it is all about doing the very best for our animals as it is possible to do, (obviously within the bounds of our own limitations at the time). Of course, the protection of the horse’s hooves is paramount and is sometimes a necessity and can be very useful when chosen wisely, with the needs of the horse uppermost in our minds.

Horses Going Barefoot

The Barefoot movement is not about being anti-shoe, but it accepts that there is inevitable damage and disruption to normal, healthy circulation when metal shoes are applied and that this is rarely going to be the best option in terms of both what the horse needs and the solutions which are available.

One issue which is frequently and quite rightly highlighted is the fact that owners are often misguided and believe that they are doing the right thing by simply removing the metal shoes and allowing their horses to be barefoot without realising the implications of this.

The domestication of horses created various problems for the horse itself and sometimes, as owners, we fail to understand just what the needs of the horse actually are. It is vital for owners to identify the genuine needs of good health and then carefully examine what they are doing which is causes potential problems for our animals and then modify our care and the horse’s lifestyle to promote better health.

Horses need a carefully thought out combination of an improved and altered living environment, an appropriate diet and monitoring and minimal trimming of the hooves to encourage a natural hoof shape means that horses can live in the domestic situation and still have very healthy bare hooves and are able to perform various tasks without metal shoes.

When problems are encountered, it is important to try to establish the actual root cause rather than simply giving symptomatic relief. As with various health conditions both in humans and animals, symptomatic relief is fine in the short term but does not address what has caused the issues in the first place, making a recurrence of the problem very likely.

Of course, a good compromise is to use protective boots and shoes when necessary for horses going barefoot. These are seen as an acceptable compromise by many and there is a wide range available to fit all hoof shapes and sizes.

What are horse boots for barefoot horses? Also known as “hoof boots”, these serve a function that is no different from how boots protect human feet. Horse boots are crafted in such a way that it can protect a horse’s otherwise sensitive feet. Not only that, they can also provide excellent traction. They are worn over the hoof wall of the horse, a part that is more or less similar in function with the human foot’s toe nail. If fitted properly, the boot is going to give protection to your horse’s feet for an average of a year, depending on the level of activity of the horse.

However, there is an argument that criticizes the attachment of any kind of horse boots for barefoot horses or, indeed, horse shoes, the explanation being that the hooves of horses are such that they are able to protect themselves from the harshest of elements. While this is true to some degree, there are some factors that make these otherwise strong feet vulnerable to injuries.

Captivity could lead to inconsistent walking patterns. In contrast to the slow, long walking associated with nomadic horses, tamed horses tend to walk faster and in shorter durations. Due to the stark differences in lifestyle, it must be noted that the feet of horses in captivity is significantly softer compared to horses found in their natural habitat. In addition, the stresses that domesticated horses endure, including the additional weight from lifting riders and luggage, increase the chances of an injury to happen. Even people from the ancient times have recognized that with the increased stress encountered by horses in captivity, a way in which they can be protected more must be utilized. This is the very reason why they have invented apparatus such as horseshoes and horse boots: to give protection to the hooves and legs of their beloved companions.

Usually, horse boots for barefoot horses are built from leather, and are designed in such a way that the wearing does not impede a horse’s natural movement. Sometimes, the measurement of the boot is custom made for the horse, but nowadays, there are many “off the shelf” versions available that the owner will have to measure and select a set of pre-prepared boots that must fit their horses’ hooves. This process can tend to be complicated, and it would sometimes take the help of someone qualified to help the horse “wear” its shoes. However, there is lots of information on measuring and fitting on my previous post, Measuring For Hoof Boots.

There are some basic guidelines one should follow when it comes to looking for horse boots for barefoot horses. As much as possible, the foot must perfectly fit into the boot, not too loose, not too tight, just a smooth snug fit. There are a lot of advantages in getting boots that are as best fitting as possible as a properly fitted boot gives the most protection while giving maximum comfort (and, indeed durability). It is a win-win situation for both horse and owner. However, it must be noted that if it is not possible to get a perfect fit, a compromise can be settled by getting the boot that is closest to the measurements of the individual horse’s foot. You should not mix and match different types of boots on the hind or front hooves, but it is acceptable to use 2 different pairs if the fit is better – ie one pair of horse boots for barefoot horses on the front, a different pair on the back.

Measuring for hoof boots is not as difficult as you might think. However, if you have any doubts, the professionals at the Saddlery Shop are always there to offer a friendly word of advice. There is also masses of helpful information on their website about how to measure up and a great FAQ section.

See Measuring and Choosing Hoof Boots

For centuries, hoof boots have existed as part of even the earliest traces of civilization. These people have domesticated horses because of their enormous potential as companions and, of course, their capacity to work. They can run fast, can haul down heavy loads, and can be well trained. With that said, domestication has somehow led the horse to go astray from its natural habitat and habits. And this has caused a lot of changes, including the increased vulnerability of the horse’s otherwise durable feet.

Recognizing this, humans first created horseshoes and later, the modern form of hoof boots. They are designed to take the brunt of the punishment that the foot takes from the ground. Anything from uneven surfaces to irregular temperatures can make feet weak. In addition, they are capable of giving horses’ legs some added traction when travelling on adverse terrain such as ice and mud. A typical hoof boot usually last in between 6 months to 2 years. During that entire time span, it is sure to give your horse extra leg protection given its heavy duty lifestyle.

Of course, there are a lot of guidelines that must be followed when looking for and measuring for hoof boots for your horse. Although you might have a particular preference, not every boot will fit every horse. It must be taken into consideration that the shoe should fit perfectly on your horse’s feet, regardless if equipping just the front, the rear, or all 4 legs. With that said, there are some guidelines when measuring for hoof boots.

The first thing that you should do, of course, is to measure up the foot properly. If this is done incorrectly, it can cause all manner of potential problems, including pain for the horse as well as uneven and faster wear of the boots, which may be prone to falling off. This is best done when the hooves are freshly trimmed. While it is encouraged that the boot must be as snug as possible, it is always designed to have at least a bit of growth tolerance, meaning there is some minimal space given to facilitate hoof growth. Width is measured on the widest part of the foot, which is the area approximately halfway towards the heel and toe. The length is measured at the part of the hoof that takes the weight. That means that the fleshy part of the heel, the frog, is not included in the measurement. The length is measured by starting on the edge of the toe to the rearmost part of the heel. If your horse’s heels are either under run or upright, you still got to measure it like you would on a normally aligned hoof.

Once you have determined the measurements, look for hoof boots that are closest to the measurements that you have derived. If there is no perfect fit, look for the best fit. When measuring for hoof boots, if the pair of hooves do not have the same measurement, the best thing that you can do is to find the best compromise for both feet. Although you can choose different pairs for the hind and front hooves, you cannot mix and match on the same set.

In general, most horse owners have a good experience with the hoof boots they buy for their horses and reviews often back this up. However, it is fair to say that as with any product, there are certain issues which arise from time to time. Overcoming common problems with hoof boots is not usually too difficult and it is usually possible to resolve matters quickly.

Common problems might include the incompatibility of the hoof to the chosen boot, or the owners error when measuring or subsequently fitting the boot.

Problems With Hoof Boots

Sometimes, finding the perfect fit is much harder than it might at first seem. There are problems such as unevenly shaped feet, a disproportionate foot length and width, among other. With that said, lets look at the potential problems with hoof boots and how a horse owner can easily handle them.

One of the first problems that horses may encounter when wearing hoof boots is the occurrence of sore feet. There are a lot of reasons why this happens, but the most common reason is a defective sole that can either be dropped or thin. Also, the horse might have a case of laminitis or other foot problems. However, there is a solution for this. You can use comfort pads so that the hoof can be protected better.

Another of the most frequently encountered problems with hoof boots is the occurrence of rubbing. The most common reason why this takes place is because the boot is too short in length compared to the foot. However, there are other reasons why this takes place. Among them are horses that have so-called “run heels” and those that have boots that fit over the coronet band. It’s a good thing though that there are solutions for this. The first solution is to go up the next size if the foot length is larger than recommended. Also, for those boots that fit over the band, wraps and gaiters should do just fine. And for bares and epics, you can replace the heel straps with taper plates.

Twisting can be a problem that hoof boot users encounter. This problem is most encountered when the boot is too wide. Twisting most commonly happen on the rear pair of feet as the horse has a natural tendency to twist their foot, making their shoe twist as well. The most common solution for this is to enhance the shoe’s grip. This is done by tightening the boot up, placing inserts so that the hoof would grip, and in some cases, foam is placed on either side of the grip in order to enhance boot tightness.

Problems with hoof boots are normal and, to some extent, are to be expected because hooves vary in shape and size. Conditions can also vary. However, it is good to know that there are remedies that can help you compensate for these problems. Proper evaluation, coupled with advice from an expert, can usually get the problem sorted in no time.

There has been an on-going debate among hoof-care experts on whether going barefoot for horses is more beneficial than wearing shoes. While some would say that horses’ shoes are vital especially for horses with delicate hooves, there are other experts who insist that going barefoot can make bad hooves be better. After a number of considerations, however, one might find that going barefoot for horses could help them develop a more versatile trot regardless of the type of terrain he is trudging on.

The “Barefoot Movement”, as many would call it, has been around for more than 20 years, and has been backed up by scientific evidence and proof. After continuous comparisons between domesticated horses which then strictly wore horseshoes, and farm horses which went barefoot, experts were astonished to find that without the metal shoes attached to the hooves of farm and wild horses, there is nothing to restrict the horse hooves’ elasticity which contributed to the hardiness of their hooves. Thus, the wild horse’ feet remained sturdy and healthy regardless of the velocity they run or the roughness of the terrain they run on. For farm owners who prefer barefoot for horses, weak hooves and lameness were rare, and hoof diseases often were caused by natural illness and not inflicted through their bareness.

There are various reasons why it is better to go barefoot for horses, especially when they are still at a young age. Horseshoes hinder the proper development of a young horse hooves and feet. Horses develop their bone structure until about 5 years old, and installing horseshoes into their hooves might be consequential to their integration to the ground and to their running. Horseshoes also hinder the circulation and the pump of a horse’s hooves. A horse’s hoof mechanism is developed through the blood pumping and circulating through it. It is a process which develops the horse’s ability to maintain and bear weight while still keeping balance. Horseshoes have the tendency to restrict blood circulation and thus cause lack of stimulation of the hooves and the feet. This might lead to the eventual denseness and coldness of your horse’s feet. Horseshoes could also lead to the inflammation of the coronary vein in the hooves especially when they are not attached properly or when they are too small or too tight.

Going barefoot for horses helps in the proper distribution of nutrients in the hoof tissues as there is no metal that hinders the proper circulation of blood. Moreover, a horse’s hoof structure is able to develop freely when there is no shoe attached to it. Of course, the benefits of going barefoot for horses will be useless if you do not provide proper hoof care for your horse, too. Instead of making your horses wear shoes, it is better to keep their hooves trimmed. By going natural when it comes to your horse’ hooves, you will be able to let your horse develop their hoof mechanism better. With a naturally induces mechanism for trotting, your horse will be at ease regardless of the type of terrain you are in.
